Default Freelander surging & blowing smoke

Have just completed a 150,000 km service on my 2008 2.2 diesel automatic Freelander.

Prior to this the car was seeming to surge during acceleration around 1500 rpm to about 2500 rpm.

Service didn't fix this and has gotten worse. Additionally the car is now blowing dark smoke when accelerating. Not quite sure if the surging is just engine revs or also between automatic gears.

Error code for engine issues has come up on dashboard.

Any ideas anyone???

yes. No longer have the car but there was a smal hole in one of the turbo cables which had to be replaced
