Starting
Yet another issue for my '02 SE.Having problems starting it now. The battery is fine and all that but there has been 2 command start /alarm systems installed and removed from this vehicle in the past which means the steering column has been taken apart at least 4 times. I think the ignition may have been damaged in the process as lately when I turn the key to the start position, all dash/instrument lights illuminate as they normally do but the car doesn't even TRY to turn over. Just a small click from a solenoid somewhere in there is heard. I usually have to remove, re-insert, and turn the key again 3-4 times before it catches and this evening it took at least a dozen attempts. Strangely this problem started out of the blue, long after the last command start was removed and long before I cropped my key to fit an LR3 switchblade fob. Any thoughts??
ok, what about the RFID chip internal to the plastic end of the original key?
the freelander uses a RFID chip and a exciter ring around the ignition cylinder.
NO chip NO start.

Oddly enough, the vehicle still starts and runs continuously with the new modified key and is no more cooperative with my spare unmodified key. It just takes several tries with either the factory or modified key to get it to engage the starter. It makes no sense to me either but this is how it behaves.[&:]
Click from underdash or from underhood? Underdash is a relay. If from underhood, then see if the starter solenoid is clicking. The starter is on top of the transmission and may sound like underdash, so get a friend to crank while you listen underhood to be sure.
If it is coming from the starter, then your starter solenoid is probably sticking and you should be able to get just the solenoid from your local Land Rover dealer, or just replace the whole starter.
