Default starting issues

Hey Im fixing up a freelander and I have had problems starting it. The battery has a tendency to go bad since its been sitting. Last time I messed with it it seemed that it wasnt starting because the hood switch wasnt depressed. However now with it depressed and a jump pack on it, it still wont start?? Its sort of a clicking - not really a relay clicking like with most vehicles. Is there some sort of security thing that needs to be dealt with after the battery goes dead? Any ideas?
