Odd starting issues! HHEELLLPPPP!! Stupid Disco II...
CLIFFS NOTES:
It is a 2000 Disco II.It turns over but does not start. It has fuel but no spark. It has a new battery that test good both under load and voltage. My OBII scanner shows only the p1590 code that popped up after I changed rear pads.I cleared it just in case.I have also reset the alarm.
I have spent HOURS searching and reading through this forum to find out the various, possible, causes for my problem and possible soultions.
THIS IS A BIT LONG BUT IT HAS TO BE!!
So for my first post I will provide as much info as possible.
BUT GOOD GAWD THIS THING IS DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!! I love it but I am ready to set a torch to it!
Ok. I do not know what has actually worked here and what was coincidence. but I will give each scenario.
And here we go.
1rst time:Two saturdays ago,it died in the drivway.
Engine would crank bot not start.
The tank was almost empty, so I put five gallons via gas can.
I drove it to the station, turned it off, filled up, started up and drove home.
Let it sit for an hour then went out to start it and again it would turn over and never catch.
Pulled up carpet checked fuel pump, fuses, relays, fuel filterandall checked outok.
I did notice that the Alarm light was doing a "fast blink".
I went out after reading the forum and reset the alarm (three time slowly locked) and it started right up.
It started up everytime every time I tried to start it the rest of that day.
2nd time: I went out the followingWed. and again...... Itwould crank and crank and crank but never start.
I reset the alarm again but it still would not start.
I let it sit for a few minute while I check out fuel pressure etc. and then reset the alarm again for the hell of it.
It started up again. And would start every time and run just fine that rest of the day.
I put a battery charger on it to trickle charge just to keep the battery tended (I figured I wouldn't hurt)
3rd time: This past Saturday I went to start it again. Again, it will crank over and over but never start.
I reset the alarm about eleventy billion times but it never helped.
I spent all day Saturday going over it and under it.
I found it had no spark.
But was not able to start it after going over everything once again.
I contact the dealership about whom to use as a tow service to haul the big paperweight in.
3rd time: LAST NIGHTI am messing around with it again myself because I haven't been able to convince myself to spend the cash to have it flatbed hauled to the stealership.
I have the door open withthe key in the ignition turned to acc. listening to the radio while I fiddle around with the disco.
I pull one of the engine relays under the hood (the one closest to the front of the vehicle) and I see the interior light and radio turn off.
I put the back in and notice the lights and radio stay off with the key still in.
I pull the key out and then put it back in to try and start. It sputters once at least!!
I go and switch the turn engine run relay positions. Both have the same part number so I should be ok.
Again the engine sputters a sec, then shoots out a cloud of fuel and starts like a champ!
I drive the ***** out of it for an hour, let it sit idiling in the driveway, turn it off, let it sit for an hour, restart i, let it sit for and hour, restart, drive it.
It is starting and running great! But.... the radio no longer turns on and off with the ignition.
What?
You have to turn it off with the radio **** and the compass its totally off. OH WELL, THE TRUCK IS RUNNING!
LAST TIME: I go out this morning to start the truck and take it to work.
Yup, you guessed it. It wont start.
I checked relays again but nothing. It turns over but never catches.
I kick it, turn around and hop my happy a$$ into the X5 and drive the eff off while cussing the Land Rover name.
What the HELL is going on? It cant be the CPK can it?

RE: Odd starting issues! HHEELLLPPPP!! Stupid Disco II...
I read in your posts that the crank senor controlled fuel injectors and not spark.
Am I incorrect?
I have plenty of fuel but no spark.
Where is the crank sensor located on the disco II? I found pics and references for the disco I for its location but not for the II.

Well...... the CPK seems to Fixed it!
And good LAWD is it always that big of a pain in the *** or ar my hands just to damn big to fit up in there?!?!?!?
Bottom cover bolt came out easily and then the top cover bolt was cross threaded and 2.5 hours later I finally got it out with a ittty bitty pair of vice grips!
Runs like a scalded rabbit now!
