Default Strange Noise

I have a strange noise when I slowly turn even when not on full lock. I know it isn't the Power Steering. The noise sounds like it is dragging the outside rear wheel round and it doesn't matter which way you turn, the noise is always from the outside of the turn. I took it to a Landrover Specialist and he told me it was caused by a previous owner not replacing all the tyres at the same time and this means that the tread is uneven on the tyres - the torque hub now thinks that it's continually going round corners instead of in a straight line and may seize completely.

Is this right?

The car was in a main dealer and he could hear the noise but couldn't find the problem.

The specialist now wants me to fit 4 new tyres and then he will download a Software Upgrade for the gearbox.

Does anyone have any opinions on this, any opinion would be helpful.

Thanks for your help

Default RE: Strange Noise

Hey, I have a 2002 Freelander that I got from a police auction. Some idiot before me put on custom 18" Rims on it with mismatched low profile tires (245/45/18) !!! I think mine has the same syndrome but worse... Since you've mentioned that it can be caused by mismatched tires, I feel a bit better since mine are in terrible shape. I notice a muffled noise that comes on for about 3-5 seconds when I'm making 90 degree tuns. It seems that the noise is comming from the rear differential. But what scares me even worse is that when I put the car in reverse and turn the wheel, like to back out of a parking spot, I hear a loud clank from under the car close to center although could also be from the rear diff. when I put it in drive seconds later and then move forward, if I turn the wheel in the other direction, the the clank comes back although not as loud. It feels like something under there gets forced into one position when reversing at an angle, then is forced back when moving forward with the wheel turned the other way. Although when reversing straight back, the clanking sound never comes on. Also tranny seems hesitant when the vehicle is just started and temp is low, but as temp becomes normal, tranny shifts very smoothly. Only 41k miles on board. I was afraid that my tranny was letting me know that the car needs to change owners ASAP. I suspected that stupid cops towed my poor AWD SUV with out using a flatbed and screwed up my rear differential and or tranny. If anyone knows what my car's suffering from, please advise, I'm too scared to take it to the dealer they charge like $279 for diagnostics and then repairs are prolly gonna be estimated at more than I paid for the whole car!
