I've had my 2000 Freelander V6 for about 10 years now and it's always been reliable and a strong workhorse. It's now at the stage where the windows no longer work including the tailgate window but that's not a real issue for me but instead of getting rid of the old chap, I want to turn this into a play thing and wonder what the maximum tyre size that I can put on my 17 inch wheels (current size 225/55/R17)
I hope that I get as much reliability out of my TD4 Freelander 2 which was bought to replace him.
I know that Freelanders are often frowned upon but I can say that my trusty old V6 has never been stuck & has been more than useful in getting the odd, VW, Mitsubishi and Suzuki out of trouble so forgive me if I don't listen to the knockers...
The freelander isn't frowned on because of the size or lack of low range, here in the US it's frowned on because its amazing to see one with a v6 that hasn't eaten itself alive, That motor was the death of the Freelander name in the US.
As far as tire size, do you have any lift etc that will play a roll in what you can clear
I'm thinking of keeping it simple so no bodywork mods for now so only a 20mm lift kit for now( simply because i've got loads of other jobs such as brake drums/shoes/cylinders and the power steering ram feed pipe too which will be a pain I'm sure) A little welding on the jacking points but not much else really so i suppose whilst I am doing all that, a bigger lift kit could be on the cards but not sure if I actually need much more.
The V6 has been pretty bulletproof and has just over 100,000 miles on it now so it sounds as though I've been lucky. It goes really well and comparable with my previous 3.0V6 S Type Jag which is why i love it so much.
