I'm looking into a 1996 Range Rover 4.0SE. Is there a certain mileage to look out for? A limit where a "Range Rover Enthusiast" would say don't buy it over this many miles? Also, if you're a big snow person, but not the biggest off-roader, is this the suv for you? Anything else I should look into before buying?

 

With a good set of snow tire it would make a great snow vwhicle. It is a little old to get one with real low mileage, stay in the 80 to 100K range.

Don't want to be too negative, but, run away from any Land Rover of that vintage that does not have complete service records that you can review, and that come with the truck. We see WAY too many people at the service shop that just picked up a P38 Range Rover that "appears" to be in good shape ---only to find out the reason the person sold it is because it needed a lot of repair work.

Problem with these are that there is so many computer systems that control every little function and still have to report to the main one that if a system acts up the whole vehicle freaks out and won't run properly. My 95 4.0 SE had many of these issues until it caught fire and insurance totaled it. I am now taking that money and putting it towards a classic Range Rover like the one I had before which I loved to 4x. If you do go with a P38 style go with one newer than 95, the first year of that style, like a 98 for example, hopefuly that way some of the issues may have been resolved that mine had. One that you can track it's service and maintanence history in detail would be very good as mentioned before, like say one you bought from the original owner from new, will tend to be better taken care of then one passed from owner to owner. It is kinda a bummer too cause I thought they looked sharp, especailly dressed up with all the extrasI seen a 98 4.6 HSE with 77K for 15K, one owner, all features functioned with no fualt codes or error messages, something like that would probably be ok and you'd be happy with it.

Last bit of advise, if at all possible get some kind of warranty with whatever you get, at least then if there is a problem you don't pay for everything out of your pocket
