Question 2001 HSE - Need second pair of Eyes

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-...A1|240%3A1318f

What do You all have to say? I have heard may reports of Airbags in suspension cracking, but this one mentions a spring system upgrade in it. I like the TV because it would be awesome for Tahoe snowboarding trips.

Simply put: Please help identify any Yellow or Red flags in this vehicle.

It is hard to identify flags on Rovers from just pictures. I would highly recommend not buying a Rover without inspecting it in person.

The good news is there are no dash lights illuminated but there could still be faults. Turning the vehicle on would reveal that but if someone was wanting to sell the vehicle they could cycle through the fault(s). There are no shots where you can read the A/C control screen. Make sure there isn't a book symbol in the lower right corner or there are problems with the A/C system.

The spring conversion is not really an upgrade, other then it eliminates the likelihood of encountering EAS faults. The conversion removes the EAS system (air springs included) and instead relies on coils. If you don't do off-roading, towing, etc you may not need or want the EAS but in many ways it is part of what makes a Rover a Rover.

Know that the DVD set-up is not factory.

I'd check tire wear as Rovers are heavy and wear tires fairly quickly. A new set can run upwards of 1K.

Regards

On second glance... the 'up-graded spring system' sounds like upgraded shocks and not the air suspension system (EAS). I would definitely verify this is the case and if it is I would run the EAS system through through all the paces and do an air bag suspension check along with valve block and air line check... like I said I would highly recommend NOT buying a used Rover without inspecting it in person

Thanks for quick reply. Yeah, I e-mailed them about those things, problem is, I live in SF, CA so it's not easy to do that. I've also always wanted to buy a car far away and go pick it up. I've never touched a Rover personally so all this is new to me. Thanks so much for your response.

it is hard to tell much from the pictures... however, it appears that the eas has been removed, no leds lit on the nav screen shot. also, it looks like the heater core might be leaking, usually just o-rings, but the coolant looks low and theres a spot thats a little discolored on the pass. floorboard. other then that, it looks clean

That's a lot of miles on a 01 for that price. Keep looking. And don't be over excited about the rear dvd player...you can buy one of those units on ebay for a couple hundred and add it to any car. I'm not a nay-sayer Rover guy - we still own 5 of them. But having one P38 still, a 96 with 123k on it - you're in for a set of issues that haven't even popped up yet. I had to call Disco Mike 2 weeks ago just to get comfortable throwing yet another $2800 in it just to keep it alive. And we're way past the $5k trying to fix a EAS and on springs now for the last 2 years. So what...they upgraded it appears to 19" wheels and tires over the 18's (and left you with a non-matching spare wheel) and for the most part kept the vehicle clean. If you had owned the car since inception and hit 100k miles, you'd keep it too because you were buried or loved it. I suspect it has a multitude of underlying issues, the seller knows it, and has decided to cut and run.

The seller is kinda a dick. I asked him questions by e-mail, and his response was: What????

How unprofessional. That alone will make me buy from someone else.

Howabout this one? It has much lower miles, but no roof rack. I figure I can put in a Thule or Yakima rack pretty easy?

Other concern, that beautiful tan leather upholstry, is it easy to clean? I don't want it trashed with wet snowboard butts or kid's shoes, etc.

That looks like a GREAT one! A bit expensive but, considering the mileage and condition, you almost can't go wrong.

The mileage is fantastic and the interior appears to be in great shape. Just keep in mind some parts regardless of mileage still have significant wear just because of age but this would be a much better buy then the previous one.
