I now have a need to pull a trailer with my 2011 RR Lux. It did not come with the towing package. I have found plenty of parts and sites for a RR Sport but little to nothing on my RR. Even British Atlantic is curiously silent though they do have the wiring harness.

So, my question is where to get the proper parts (meaning I want a clean installation not "make it fit") and instructions. From looking under the rear bumper it seems like there is more to it than hanging a drawbar.

After talking to my mechanic who is phenomenal... I commented on how the LR part was consideribly different than after market. Many do not even list for a Full Sized RR just the Sports. He said that the installation was quite complicated in as far as it is "involved" and that the dealer has to activate the electronics to know it is tow capable. So I am going to be at the mercy of the dealer. he has quoted from ~1,300.00 to 1,600.00 for the parts and labor. My confidence in the only LR dealer within 300 miles is always very shakey but what choice is there....

The hitch itself was the problem finding. Good link, thank you. Now the part I didn't want to ask. How much of a job is it to install it? From what I understand the bumper and tail lights have to be removed. After putting the electrics in I do understand that a trip to the dealer to tell the RR it is tow capable is required. Any good links that would detail the job? I like working on it but this is sounds like I am just going to give up and give the LR dealer the $1,600 to do it all.

You have a "phenominal" mechanic who should be easily capable of performing the installations. Once done, the electronics need programming so the Rover automatically selects tow hight when connected to trailer. This maybe done by dealer, or, often at significant savings, by any LR specialist shop with any of several diagnostic devices. You may learn that a nearby Independent LR shop will perform the entire installation and programming at significant savings when compared to dealer, whether you or they supply the parts. This maybe worth investigating to some...

A good place to begin looking for nearby independent LR specialitst shops is: Land Rover Repair Shops - Find a Land Rover Mechanic | LRShops.com Performing a search (google, duckduckgo, etc.) for "independent Land Rover shops near ..... (your location or zip code)" will often lead to other good nearby resources. A few calls to those nearby will let you know what capabilities they have and pricing for their services.

Once the receiver and wiring kit are installed, a LONG hitch (11"-12", to clear bumper) with proper drop (or rise) to keep the trailer you'll be towing level (especially important on dual axle trailers) with appropriately sized ball will be needed.

In addition to the wiring kit and hitch receiver, if you intend to tow a trailer with electronic brakes, you'll need a good brake controller in the cab, easily accessable to the driver. I use and recommend the Tekonsha P3, with the 3035p wiring harness (which is a direct plug-in). There are others.... I bought my first kit from etrailer, but last from an eBay seller. They're also available through Amazon. Pick your poison.

Just an update to this thread that was very helpful. Roverland Parts shows out of stock on that hitch now and I can't locate anywhere else so not sure it is available still. I also compared the bumper cover video to the Westfalia instructions and I think I see why the part may no longer be available. If you watch the video and look at how the uncovered bumper appears at the end, you see a smooth flat bumper bar. If you look at the Westfalia instructions, you'll see that you're supposed to be able to remove 4 bolts on either side of the bumper facing the rear that are no apparent in the video. Crawling under my car, it appears that LR changed the bumper design. My '11 matches the video. You can see where there are four bolts of some sort holding the bumper bar to the back of the car, but they now look like weld marks (no visible bolts) and they are hidden behind that bumper bar. I would not have been able to continue following the Westphalia instructions past Step 1. I stopped there but suspect that the Westfalia instructions are for an earlier rear bumper design that no longer matches these later cars. I'd recommend anyone considering a DIY mount following the Westphalia instructions remove the bumper cover before proceeding with purchasing the parts if they are able to locate them to validate that the instructions work. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see how the mount could slide into place and be bolted on given what I'm seeing under my bumper. If anyone solves this or learns more, please post back. Note, my car is US spec, not Euro/UK so perhaps that is the difference.

 

Hey, I just installed it today on my 2011 autobiography black. I was worried too when I didn't see the screws but what happened is that they forgot to add in the instructions a step where you remove the actual bumper bar that seats below the bumper cover. Once you remove the bar you place the hitch and cover it back with the bumper bar. The rest of the steps are the same. Let me know if you need some pictures.
