Buying a used Range Rover
My son is looking at purchasing a mid-90's Rover and has identified a couple with less than 100k miles that he THINKS he can afford. Any advice on what he should look for or what years are best?
Great safe truck, very capable , not the best on gas mileage and does need to run on high octane. If he is pretty mechanical, it would be a pretty awsome vehicle.
im am 16. i love my range rover. i drive a 1996 range rover 4.0 se. i think it it worth it. there is not another car on the road like them. for any situation, a range rover is always appropiate.
Hello JK...
Here is a great set of information for you. Have fun...but be prepared with some reserve cash for parts and service issues you don't want to handle yourself. These are not you "average" vehicles and certainly not for everyone. Bu I would never part with my '92 Classic County.

Check it out and wait for the right one.

By mid 90's, is he looking at a Classic, or the newer p38?
Apart from the obvious like off road damage....
If he's looking for a Classic, then the main points to look for are corrosion in the front innner wings, rear cross member, sills and rear wheel arches (particularly where the seat belts mount).
Check for water or exhaust gas in the coolant as this can indicate a slipped cylinder liner.
The rear tailgate (based on UK experience) will probably be showing signs of corrosion, but this expected for a 10+ year old vehicle.
High mileage is not a main issue, buy on condition not necessarilly age/mileage as a low mileage vehicle can require more work to put "right" than a well maintained high mileage one. check that all the electric toys work, particularly the air suspension if fitted. If this is knackered, it's very expensive to put right and often cheaper and easier to resort to the original coil spring suspension.
Finally, look at several, take the plunge and enjoy. They do need a bit of fettling, but will tollerate more "issues" than a normal car.
