Default HELP!

I was at an intersection today and when I took off, the transmission made a grinding noise like someone trying to shift a manual without using the clutch. As a result, my truck (89 RR) won't move an inch and the noise won't stop unless in neutral. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks all!

That sounds to me like a bad transfer case. I'm guessing that if you have the transmission in any of the forward or reverse gears it makes the noise, but it won't make the noise in park or neutral. Try switching to low range, see if it still makes the noise. If the noise goes away and the truck moves, you need a new transfer case. If it still makes the noise and doesn't move you may still need a new t-case, I don't know enough about the RRCs to be able to say.

Good luck, sorry for your misfortune.

Alos,
Try starting the truck, put it in gear with the emeggency brake on and look under neith the truck and see if either drive shaft is spinning.

And what about Mike's test? This could also mean you have a bad differential. If you see one driveshaft spinning but not the other, the one that is spinning may have a bad differential. You say the sound is coming from the transmission? Does it vary with engine RPM? Can you pinpoint the sound as coming from the transmission tunnel as opposed to from the front or rear diff?

In response to Mike's test, neither driveshaft will turn with drive engaged and even with the handbrake off the truck won't move. The noise is definitely coming from the transmission/ t-case area and it becomes louder with more RPM. Thanks again guys!

My 93' RR make a grinding noise when trying to shift the transfer case from High to Low if the truck isn't rolling. Sounds like the sequencers aren't quite lining up. This is a long shot but You might try /w/ a buddy pushing the truck to get t-case in neutral and back into low or high gear again. Good luck

No cigar. Anyway as of now the truck is for sale in the classifieds section of this page. I'm simply not financially able to keep it anymore. Thanks for all your help throughout & happy Rovering!

I noticed this thread, and I seem to have the opposite problem. My 1998 Disco 1 (100k) drives fine, but once is a while (every few months) when I shift it into park or neutral, it makes the sound as if I were shifting without the clutch. Any thoughts? Everything else seems in order... I will usually kill the car, then shift into park and then remove the key whenever this happens. Your help is appreciated.
