Default LT230 problem?

Hello! I am brand new to the forum, and relatively new to rover ownership. I bought a 1995 Range Rover County Classic LWB 3 months ago. It wasn't in great shape when I bought it, (Ohio rust does a number on the undercarriage) and one of the problems I am having in with the center diff. When I put it in low and lock it, I have a hard time getting it back into high, and still have some mild skipping on hard pavement. Eventually it seems to settle itself, but I'm afraid more damage is being done. I have read that a common problem is guys who don't lock the diff when they go off road, get one wheel off the ground and shred the diff, which isn't designed to do that. Could a previous owner having done something like that lead to the symptoms described? Any thoughts? I look forward to being on the forum!
