Default Made a roof rack yesterday

I was going to buy one but cost and time got the best of me. I have to head to CA for Christmas this year and need some extra storage space. Take a look and tell me what you think.

Looks good! Wish I was crafty like that... how are you attaching it? It really does look good though. Just needs a black (or other color) powedercoating and it'll look great.

I am getting it coated in gloss black to match to the Rover. I need to put on some light tabs and attach the feet plates. I am planning on attaching it in a similar way to the oem LR one. I will post some pics when I get it on but it probably won't be for a week or so.

Some of my friends have made their own roof racks, and many seem very fragile and half a**ed. This one looks professional and very good in my opinion. I specifically like the way you placed the reinforcements at the base.

Thanks for the compliments and input. I am hoping it will be able to hold about 600 lbs max when I am done, not that I will ever put that much up there. I cannot wait until it is warmer to weld, breathing in those fumes was not so pleasant.

Spending time making this makes we want to make bumpers and stuff.

One thing you may want to look into, especially if this is being attached via the rain gutters, is how much load your gutters will actually support. The basket may be able to hold 600lbs or whatever amount it ends up being, but your gutters may fail long before you are able to find out. Standing still it will support the weight just fine, but once you start moving is when your problem will begin.

thats why some racks use four or more supports to the gutter.

Well the P38 does not have rain gutters like the Disco's do so I am not using them. I am using the rof rack mounts that are hidden in the channels and I am using all six of them. I know that Yakima and Thule advertise their racks at holding upwards of 500 lbs and that is with only four atachment points. They key is load dispersement. If Iput 100 lbs on each attachment point the roof is strong enough for that. Chances are I will never have that much weight up there so I may be looking at only 50 lbs per point and most of that will be dispersed across the whole rack.
