Default no a.c. belt on newly purchased

hello all,
I recently purchase a range rover classic(1990).
after the power steering pump replacement, a fuel pump replacement, and a left front caliper replacement it is nearly road ready. when checking to see if the ac/heat worked I noticed the ac compressor had no belt. why would somebody remove this without replacing it? does it have an effect on the heating as it is also not working? anybody know what that belt is named specifically as I cannot locate one. the tachometer is out, any coincidence?.I'll stop right there with the questions. thanks for all your help in advance.

You should be able to pick the belt up at a local auto parts store. The absence of an AC belt will not cause the rest of the HVAC system to malfunction. The belt probably corroded and fell off... Or the compressor might be shot and the previous owner decided to remove it.

The AC compressor may be bad and that is why, if you try it and it screams then you have your answer. Some people pull them off too because believe it will unleash ectra horse power. What people forget is that the AC compresor runs for the defrost function as well since it dries out the air when it heating it.

Find a new belt and then see what it does, you can also check the oil/coolant level in the compressor as well and get an idea of what may be wrong.

Really? I didn't know that. How do you do it?

Any autoparts store will have a gauge or you will get one if you buy a recharging kit. It will tell you how much is in there and if it is full or empty. You just attach it to the AC port on the firewall. With the can you can just add whatever you need until the desired amount is reached.

I willing to bet the compressor is shot. Mine went and it was very loud. Some one recommended taking off the belt, but as stated earlier no AC no defrost...

I guess for starters he could try to spin the pulley by hand and see if it is frozen, then go from there.
