I am about to buy a 2002 Range Rover 4.6 HSE with a blown engine for bout 2k. According to the seller, the Vehicle has approx. 75,000 miles on it. Recent work includes new radiator, new coils and plug wires, new front diff. seals and bearings, fluid change in Tranny and Rear end. Recent brake pads on all four corners. Battery is less than 1 year old.

The Air Suspension was replaced with new shocks and coils approximately 3,000 miles ago(this car has less than 75k mileage). It has 20" factory range rover rims powder coated glossy black ( one is showing some rust). The original rims also come with it, with 4 fairly good tires.
I wanna know if it is a wise investment, and would I haveto replace the whole engine? Please respond. Thanks

 

That is a rough question and the answer will depend on your mechanical abilities. The 4.6 will be harder to find a replacement for and it may or may not need to replaced completely. Do you know what happened to the engine? I basically did the same thing with mine and it has turned out great for me so I would say to go for it if you can replace the engine or do the work yourself.

If you go to Roverland parts which is a Rover breaker the engine is $3,250. It is hard to find that 4.6 around just being sold and that is what I ran into when my 4.6 was out. I found a 4.0 for $700 that I replaced myslef. There are a few quirks in doing that and ended up replacing the transmission as well since I failed to use the proper spacer, off by 4mm.

To rebuild it would cost quite a bit too depending on what damage happened when it blew up, I do not have any cost ideas for that one. I would call around and see if you can find an engine for a good deal and go from there. Do not plan on having it on the road very quickly though unless you are willing to put out some serious money.

The new re-manufactured blocks are built incredibly well and address a lot of the problems found on the original rover v8. The RR you are looking at probably blew a head gasket and slipped a liner.

 

$2200 seems high for a truck that needs a new engine. When you are done you will have more money into it than the truck is worth. If you are not capable of doing the job yourself I would not recommend buying it. If you are mechanical and can you the job you might be ok.

You have to remember as well that they guys sellig it knows that what he is asking is a stretch for a vehicle with out a running motor so he should be willing to negotiate. If you can get it in the neighborhood of $1500 then even if the motor does not work out you could part it and make your money back. I am sure he is not having his door beat down with buyers so he should be open to offers.
