Last week I hardwired my radar detector in my Rover. I have a valentine 1 which in my opinion is the best on the market. In fact, I think it is the only reason I still have a license. I went out for test run and I was disappointed to find it was having problems. First of all it looks like the range is severely limited. I drove by one of those "your speed is" radar signs and it didn't pick it up until I almost passed it. The other problem I had is that it was picking up many false signals. It was getting 8 to 9 false alarms at a time. There must be something in the Rover that is putting out a radar signal. Have any of you had similar problems? How did you resolve them? I'd really hate to have to install a remote unit.

 

Interesting. I too have a radar detector in my RR and have noticed that the detection distance is really lame. I can usually see the police car before it goes off which makes me wonder why I even have it. I never even thought about the heater wires affecting the signal. Makes sense. I don't get any more false alarms though.

 

My Valentine 1 typically has a range of 2 to 3 miles. In the Rover it has a range of about 100ft.

 

My BEL Vector has no trouble through the heated windshield (which isn't working, my next post). Range of miles if clear, maybe 1/2 mile to a mile with Ka band.

Try the valentine in a different vehicle and see if your false alarms persist.

 

I have had this Valentine for several years and used it in over a dozen vehicles and this is the first time it has ever acted up. The Valentine has a "bogey counter" and so it shows the number and locations of the radar signals it is picking up. It is usually getting 8 to 9 false x-band signals coming from the rear. It doesn't do this in any other car.
