Default Range Rover Air Suspension

Hi,

I just recently purchased a used 1999 Range Rover 4.0, Imported from Japan (Right hand drive) to the Bahamas in Excellent condition, with roughly 62,000 miles on it. I've read some horrifying stories about the Air Suspension on these vehicles, and was wondering if anyone was aware of any preventative maintenance steps that i can take to in sure that the air suspension system doesn't fail on me. I must say i love the air suspension technology but I don't want to be caught with my pants down, and end up spending countless sums of money trying to repair the system should it fail. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The only real preventative maintenance is to watch for signs of impending failure.

Check the bags and tubing condition regularly. Replace bags if excessively cracked or leaking can be heard from bag. Fix tubing if leaking can be heard at the collett. Listen for the compressor and make sure it isn't running excessively. Watch for the car sinking overnight or experiencing other height adjustment issues. Disconnect the EAS every so often and make sure it still stays up overnight.

The majority of problems reported with EAS are a result of owner neglect when the vehicle has given one, if not more, signs that the EAS system is failing. So just pay attention and check regularly and you shouldn't have catastrophic failure. Some parts may still go but you can prevent the whole system from failing by watching for the signs.

The only other thing I can add to ldivine is to cycle through the suspension now and then to keep it flexy and if you are driving through mud a lot then raise it all the way up and clean out the bags, that way of there is sand or muck in the folds of the bad it will be like sandpaper and will eventually wear them out sooner.

Thanks for your timely responses, and valuable advice. I will definitely take them into consideration. Can some briefly explain what the EAS is? I've purchased a service manual for my Range Rover but unfortunately it hasn't arrived as yet.

The EAS is the suspension system as a whole. It will include the air compressor, air srpings, air valve block and solenoids, and then the air tank under the body. It is a wonderful system and in my opinion if it can be repaired it should never be swapped over to coils. For the age of the vehicle it is rather advanced as well, meaning it has the stigma of being overly complicated and expensive. As we said before maintenance is going to be your friend.
