range rover p38 shifter indicator light

hello i have a 96 range rove p38 the truck runs fine , on my automatic shifter , you have the red small light on the console to show u which gear u r in , well evey thing is fine when i put it in park and i turn the rover off and take the key out of the ignition , the little small red light indicater will stay onn but not as bright , it will be very dime red light , but when i press the mode switch , the red indicator light will go out then, can any one help me out with this issue, plus my mode switch it seems like its not engageing and ne message on dash like sport , can someone help me too with this other issue...........also , thanks
