Shopping for a p38
After some searching I’ve found a couple p38’s that seem decent for the money. One is a 4.6 HSE, the other a 4.0. I hear all kinds of problems on here but really like them. How bad are they really? If I fix one up and keep steady on the maintenance would they be ok? It would be for my wife mostly who only goes into town or runs the kids around. The occasional road trip maybe 3 times a year. I love my disco and have no fear of wrenching.

Get the one w the most maintenance records you possibly can. Or get it real cheap and do all the maintenance when you get it.
Heater core o rings are a big one. They leak on the passenger side floor. A bit of a paint but there are short cuts.
Door lock actuators are a big annoyance. Along w the door handles themselves.
I'd personally get one of those BCM sync mate tools and throw it in the glove box.
Screw air suspension. (riot incited)
I'd disable that God awful beeping that the dash does first thing.
Look for HG history or basically count on doing the sooner or later.
They aren't bad aside from the electrical quirks. I love em too.

It’s been sitting for 5 years, the original owner lost his license at age 91, the current owner bought it to resell. He changed the fuel pump and changed out the old gas, new battery and alternator, says everything works and it runs and drives fine. It was in a heated horse barn. What should I look for? Dried up seals and gaskets? Anything else you can think of? From what I’ve seen available around me is these typically go for 1000.00 junker up to 4500.00 for a current driver with rust issues and over 150,000 miles. 100,000 km is only 60,000 miles.

Seals and hoses are the big ones. Also brake parts sometimes have a tendency of letting go shortly after being brought back to use.
A climate controlled environment does help though. I would recommend having it checked out by a shop that is very comfortable with the P38 and if they give it a clean bill of health work your best deal and be happy.
I am one of those strange folks that has a soft spot for the P38 as well

I bought a 98 with 120k and fresh head gaskets, new suspension, new headlining, hood paint repair, etc for $3500 USD. You don't even see them for higher than half that price around here... That price is way high but the truck looks like a nice catch if you can get a better deal.
