Default Whining Sound

I usually have my music on and the air blowing but today I didn't. As I was pulling up to my house at a slow speed (5 - 10 mph) I noticed a slight whining sound coming from the engine and wondered if that is normal. I never noticed it before but that may be due to the other environmental factors...

Was your AC and / or fan on? Duplicate what you did, again - no radio etc with the fan blower off - I bet that's what you heard. I've taken our 06 and 08 HSE's in repeatedly for this problem and each time it's diagnosed as the fan blower.

I am pretty sure the fan was off and so was the radio. I pulled onto my street with the windows down and that is when I heard it. I heard some whining later this evening while also traveling at a slow speed (this time with the windows up and fan on).

your front differential may be going out... but I doubt it. Mine makes a whining sound from the transmission but, it is old lol.

On your 07, doubtful. I get a stupid "whine" noise on both our 06 and 08 HSE's - if you shut the fan blower off it goes away. Annoying as hell and been checked repeatedly....one of those "have to learn to live with" Rover items in my opinion....

I have that same fan whining noise on my '07. Annoying (more so since the wife complains about it every so often)... but i'm glad it's nothing more serious.

If it is just a noise I am perfectly fine with it but I just wasn't sure if it was an indication of something more serious.

Default Whining sound

Had the same whining sound in my 06' HSE; it would go off spuratically and would last anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. Took it to the dealer and found out the problem was with a fan in the navigation system, got it fixed and no more whining.
