WTB Older RR (?-2001). Any suggestions?
Looking at a 1997 4.0 currently that has just under 100,000, in good condition, and has been converted from air to coil over shock. I'm expecting to pay under $4,000 (this may be hopeful). Any suggestions? This is the first Range Rover for me. I've had Disco's before (Series II).

Check anti freeze look for brown color( sign of over heating) make sure to check service records if possible. If all looks good, see if you can have an independant Rover mech do an inspection ( you'll need to know one). It will cost
$80 or so but may keep you from buying some one's head ache.

Thank you for the reply. I was at a sale today and got a look at a 1998 4.0. I noticed the coolant was nice a green, but the oil filler cap had condensation underneath, and a yellowish gunk inside. The engine was also covered in an oily greenish-yellow slime. So I figured the head gasket was probably going bad (head gasket is when coolant and oil/combustion can mix, right?). Inside, the air suspension was showing failure, the transfer case was stuck in neutral (low by the sound of the drive), and there were a host of other problems. The asking was $3,200 and I promptly ran away in the other direction....

Good call. I looked @ a few myself before settling on my 02. I actually got it at LR and they dropped the price from 11998 to 8900.I offered 8500 and they told me 9300. So after 2weeks I called back and said could we meet in the middle? I really wanted a black on black but I know this one was well cared for and service at the dealership so I was able to see service info.
