Default 05 Freelander limp mode , won’t start

My brother has a 2005 Freelander that runs great sometimes. It goes into what seems to be limp mode then won’t start until they hit a fuel cutoff button.. Any help from anyone would be great! Not sure what to do ????

Ok so asked him again last night about it’s symptoms. So here we go. Sometimes it will crank and crank but won’t start. They press a button behind the engine he says then it will fire right up.. Then after driving awhile it will start throwing lights on the dash and go into a limp mode.
