Hi,

Truck running great but yesterday my check engine light came on so I drove home. My machanic not open on weekends will call on Monday.

Anything I may have missed under the hood that could cause light to come on? Is it ok to drive short distance or should I not drive it at all?

Everything under the hood appears to be full.

Your mechanic cannot check the check engine code for you.
Under the passenger seat is a black box about the size of a box of matches, turn the key to the "RUN" position, that box will light up and 2 digit numbers will flash on the screen, write them down.
Google them, then post what you find, you can also reset the codes with that box.
There is no port for your guy to plug his scanner into, yes it is safe to drive as long as the CEL is not flashing.

Thanks! This is the code I got info is below mine is still idling ok but I do notice a ping for sure and runs a little rough.

Gonna have my mechanic do the steps below and check out the truck again. Does that all sound correct?


Code 48 - Stepper motorCheck base idle speed as follows:

1. First remove and clean the idle motor and the port it screws into. Clean the throttle body as well.
2. On the top of the throttle body you will see a hole (possibly covered by an anti tamper plug) for the base idle adjuster.
3. Remove the air bypass hose from the throttle body, which will cause the engine to speed up to 2500rpm or so. Unplug the connector to the idle motor after 5 seconds then reconnect the hose.
4. Squeeze the hose shut with needle nose vise grips and adjust the base idle using an allen wrench to give an idle speed of 6-700rpm. Get the lowest speed you can that gives smooth running and does not stall when blipping the throttle. Screw in for slower idle, out for faster idle.
5. Reconnect the idle stepper and remove the vise grip and you should be done.
6. In addition, refer to tests 15 and 16 of continuity test procedure. Check road speed sensor- refer to test 25 of continuity test procedure

 

DO NOT have him adjust the idle speed screw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just clean the idle control valve and the throttle body.
