Default 2003 disco,..burning oil. What is typical cause?

Ive read threads stating that a quart in 1000 miles is not unusual, even for new Discos.,.........read a thread recently where a guy fixed his oil consumption by replacing his oil separator on the passenger side valve cover with a PCV valve. Before I take the time to do a leak down test, I thought I would inquire here if there is a common problem found when these vehicles consume oil.

Defiantly check the pvc system, if the crankcase is pressurized you will consume more oil.
For some reason LR decided to change the separator on 03-04 models, making it harder to change.
Do you see blue smoke? Are the plugs fouling?
if you dont find any thing there them it time for a leak down test
I could debate the quart of a 1k miles I use maybe ½ per oil change 3-4k miles

How do I check my PCV system?

I haven't noticed any blue smoke, but I do smell burning oil at the tailpipe, and actually recently noticed what appears to be tiny oil spots on my flat black license plate light cover. No oil drip. When I replaced the plugs and wires about 3 years ago, I did the valve cover gaskets, and have no oil drips on my driveway,.....so,.....its all going out the tail pipe.

I was running Rotella 15-40 until recently and was using a quart every 6-800 miles, switching to Castrol 20-50 seems to have slowed that down a bit.

Both my catalytic converters have died in the last year as well,...so thinking that confirms the oil consumption.

The odometer shows 185,000 miles now, but, but have reason to believe (from documentation) That a prior owner replaced the odometer with one showing lower than actual mileage.

The truck runs great, and until recently, I was commuting 100 miles a day at 70 mph and still getting 14 mpg

pull the hose off the breather on the passenger side valve cover and see if you have any suction.
the earlier models had a fairly easy to replace plastic insert that you replace from the top. I have read a lot people having problems with the later model seem it doesnt just pull out as easy as the earlier years.
you can also use carb. cleaner with a spray tube and see if you can get it to clean out that way

AFAIK burning oil is pressure in the crankcase pushing it past the pistons or worn piston rings. I think a quart per oil change is ALOT!
