2003 land rover freelander backfired thru tailpipes

It backfired on acceleration and i didnt gun it or anything but after backfiring it will nkt turn over. Any ideas on what i need to look at?

Sounds like it was more serious than a back fire.

when i tried to start today it sounded as if it was the timing off it didnt have the compression sound when trying to start
