Default 87 or 91

Can 87 fuel be used in a 02 freelander or is 91 recommended. In the manual it says 87 is ok is it better to go with the 91 anyways?

For all the Freelander motor issues, I would run only hi octane.

I went with 89 on my first fill up and got 18 mpg, put premium 91 on the 2nd fillup.
