'96 Disco 1 won't start or turn over
Hello,
My Disco 1 will not turn over. Some history:
1. Wife bought it new. Then I took it over. We call her "Smiley", as my wife is always smiling while 4WDing.
2. Safari Gard stage 11.
3. Trans/Transfer case locked up going 65 towing a heavy trailer, which locked up various wheels.
4. Put in a donor engine, transmission, and transfer case from a '99.
5. All wiring plugged back in.
6. Truck ran before transplant. Key fob worked as did alarm system.
Problem:
1. Ready to fire up. Turn key, eng., oil pressure light etc comes on.
2. Turn to start position, nothing turning over.
3. Clicking of relays in passenger side kick panel. (seems like that area.)
4. So, battery ran dead while sitting.
5. Put in charged battery.
6. Can turn over by jumping starter.
Based on some other replies it seems like the "imobilizer" has been activated. Any thoughts on how to get this back up to "normal". Worked fine before for the last 18 years or so. Really wanting to see if it starts after 8 weekends of working on it.
Thanks, John

No overhaul, no change, ran perfectly for two weeks (after previous similar problems and then new ignition coil, amplifier, spark plug wires), returned from a 100 mile trip, unpacked stuff, three hours later wanted to go to the store, and no start. That was two weeks ago. Turns over but no start.
Helllo fellow Land Rover Owners.
I posted about my '96 which would not start or turn over after engine and transmission removal and reinstall. I removed entire drive train, eng, trans., transfer case and transm. Swaped in a donor which has only 98K miles vs mine with 165K, LEAKY, Head gasket problem. NP230 blew up. etc.
Donor was from a wrecked '99 Disco 1. 98K miles and a top end with 10k miles. Had the truck towed the the dealer in Walnut Creek, CA as I thought it was Imobilized. By the way I took apart the dash and the '96 does not have the "spider" box behind the radio. It has the green box under the passenger foot area behind the glove box. This green box is the transmitter for the alarm system and the "tie" into the ECU. This was NOT the problem.
Note I had verified with a volt meter that there was not 12 v + to the starter when the key was turned to the "start" position. This was to the wire to the soloniod. I gave up at this point....towed to Walnut Creek Cole European.
The problem was when the new transmission was bolted up to the engine the linkage adjustment got changed. If the sensors do not see "park" or "neutral" it will not turn over. The dealer actually was able to start it in "neutral". So check these adjustments according to the book. I'm up and running now. All faults cleared up with the new engine. Should be a runner. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks,
John
