Default Battery Light

The battery light on my 2000 Discovery started coming on a few days ago. Tach still works and there is no noticeable change in the way it runs. I'm new to the forum, but I have read some posts concerning the alternator. Any ideas? I know a new alternator is close to $700.00 at Landrover although I've seen some on the net for around $200. I'll do it myself before I let rover take me to the cleaners.

Take your LR to a shop, or a Auto zone that sells batteries
most will have a tool that can tell if is the alternator.
Most do it at no charge.
