chance of water damage
The computer is on the passenger fender, yes if you get it wet you are D-O-N-E.
You need to know how deep the water is, and then start slow with the transfer case in low range so you have lots of power, water is heavy and when pushing it with the truck you will want as much power as possible.
Start slow, speed up until you have a nice bow wake and then hold that speed until you are back on dry ground.
Depending on how deep the water is...if you stop you will be dead in the water, if you try and back up same thing.
I would also turn off your lights and a/c before driving in deep water.
Watch my video and watch the hood of my truck.

This is how its done properly.

I would rather have a high maintenance girlfriend than a meth *****.
Yes you can water proof the ECU, unhook the battery, then remove the ECU, open it and make sure it is dry.
Use silicon to seal it, let it dry over night and put it all back in the truck.
Dont let those guys peer pressure you into doing stupid stuff, if they want to fix their trucks all the time that fine for them.
Just show them these videos...

And then remind them that those trucks were 100% stock LR diesels, the only things added were roll cages and expedition gear.

Yes you can have a water proof equipment. but then again when you remove and use the make sure it is dried. or else you would end up with another problem.
