Can anybody tell me if when driving it is normal for the diff to make a whining noise. it isn't loud but noticable . 94 V8I dISCO AUTO .its done 260,000km. One owner who kept up services etc said the dealer told him when he bought it that it was normal. Bought it in nov 05 for about $9500 Aussie $.

No, this is not normal if it is a stock diff. If someone changed out the ring and pinion gear set and didn't set it up properly then it may may a whining sound either while speeding up or slowing down. If it is stock, I would suggest you drain the case looking for signs of meta and or bearing wear.

I am in Denver Colorado, deep in the snow right now.
So have you had a chance to look any further into what is going on with your diff?
