DII "Service Engine Soon"
The Service Engine Soon liglt on mMy '99 DII recently came on. I cleared the codes and kept a close eye. A week later it came back on with the same codes : Bank 1 too lean ; Bank 2 too lean ; Incorrect ratio gear 4 ;and multiple cyl misfire. My first thought was O2 sensors, but a family member (who is a ford diesel mechanic) told me that bank 1 and bank 2 rarely go out at the same time, his opinion was that it's either a vac leak or a MAF problem. Any advise from roverguys would be greatly appreciated. The truckhas 105k andI just installed new larger tires, if that may have anything to do with it. Thanks, Jim in FL.
Check your air box to be sure the alignment tabs are not folded under. If so, a new lid and air filter are needed. The MAF is most likely contaminated from the dirt sucked by. Replaceand you should be good to go.
Is the MAF not able to be cleaned? I pulled my airbox apart and the filter needed to be changed, and a locking clamp is broken, as well as one of thetwois broken on the tube right at the MAF.
The MAF doesn't take to be cleaned, it will improve some of your trucks lost features for a short time but in the eng you will need to cough up the $125 for a new one. Be glad you don't have a D1, they are real pricey to replace.

Thanks for the info. Do I need to buy a new air box lid, and intake tube, or is this not that big of a problem? I only go off road on fairly easy trips, and only about once every couple months. Thanks again.
I have broken a few tabs from my air box lid and i have found that as long as i take my time when I remove and reistall the lid, I have no problems.
You will need to replace the MAF to regain your total performance, once you replace it, have the codes cleared and you'l be set.

Alright guys, one more question. I've fixed all of my problems exept the maf sensor, i've found an online site that sells two different options for this sensor. First option is just the sensor that screws into the intake tube $89. And second option is complete sensor assembly ( short section of tube, screen and sensor.) for about $130. Any foreseen problems with the cheaper option? Thanks again .
