Hi !

I am not a Disco specialist, but if that light is on, it may mean a couple of things:

1. Really check the engine: Oil, filters, coolant, electrics/electronics, anything.
2. Just a bad contact somewhere causing the light to come on.
3. General computer F-U.
4. Failure of proper worship of the Prince of Darkness, Sir Joseph Lucas. (this involves pentagrams, black candles, chickens and mushrooms gathered under a full moon).

To put a smile on your face, please read this: http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/SIII_lucas.htm

If I were you, I would check anything I can, especially for loose/bad/oxidized contacts. If fault persists, I would take the Disco to a proper garage.

Regards,

Takeo.

The light comes on when the sensors pick up a fault in the engine management, for instance if the air filter is blocked, the engine will not be getting enough air into the engine for a good combustion. Thus the engine management switches the light on.

So going to a garage to have the light reset, will only work if the cause has been remedied.

If after do all the checks that Takeo suggested, and you find everything is okay, then you will need to take it to a garage which has a Land Rover computer to plug into it to read what the engine management is reporting as a fault. If you can stand and watch over them, and see what comes up on the screen. Have heard of some rouge backstreet garages charge a lot of money to do work, and then all they do is remove the wire to the lamp on the dash.

HI Guys I purchased a 99 Dico II for my father, and the light comes on and off, I read through the manual and thought it could have been the gas cap, then I went to a local smog shop to get the car smogged, they wouldn't smog it, I called Land Rover, and they said that light comes on when a sensor goes bad or detects a part that went bad.

I saw the site that sells the equipment, it was around 1300 pounds, which when converted to US funds is way too much, I know enough about cars, to want to try to fix this problem myself. I just need to know the codes the CPU is putting out.

Is there any company that rents these tools like a pepboys or autozone?, Also does anyone have a list of the codes and reference to them?? SOrry for all the questions but in CA you have to smog the car when you purchase it, and I need to smog this asap. thanks,

Hi !

I don't know Jack Fertilizer about Disco electronics, but try sending an e-mail to our club's president, Alain Hoffmann, he may know something:

alain@landroverclub.net
or
Annette may find you an online workshop manual or know someone who's got it on cd:
annette@landroverclub.net

On the other hand, maybe our friend Lightning in here may help.

Regards,

Takeo.

The codes seem to be hard to find, as I have managed to avoid the purchase of vehicles with those little black boxes, not sure I could help.

I know some company is selling a cheap hand held code reader, will try and find info on it, as I saw it advertised only recently in Land Rover Owner International or in Land Rover Monthly.

It just reads the codes and tells you what they are, but will not reset the box.

Basic kit from ROvacom lite for discovery 2 engine management system is around 350GBP which even with the weak dollar is around 500USD. Don't know where you got 1300 GBP try going through the vehicle selector which will tell you which bits you need. Not sure how much a dealer would cost you but couple of visits and I think youd be well in

I went to autozone while I had this problem, and thought I could update my situation for everyone, so that if it happens to you you will know what it is.

I went autozone and rented a OBDII Scanner by Actron, basically you pay a deposit fee and when you return the scanner they refund the deposit. So its free. Hooked up the scanner and read the error codes. It pulled 2 codes, both were saying that the left and right banks were running lean. So I knew it was fuel starvation related.I then reseted the codes, and drove the car for about 15 minutes, and it returns again. So I knew that there was a fualt causing the CEL to turn on.

I found out that the car had an extended warranty on it, so I took it to a local land rover dealership, I did not tell them what I knew, but they did find out what the problem was, the MAS (Mass Air Sensor/meter) went bad. Which isn't a good thing, because it measures air intake and temp to configure the fuel output. To make a long story short, They fixed it.

The point I want to make is that, changing the MAS is very easy , it takes about 10 minutes to do, If I knew that this was the problem and I didnt have the warranty then I could have had LAnd Rover troubleshoot the car tell me the problem, and decline their service.
Thanks,
