Default ecu

ok so i have a 1996 discovery SE with the gems V8 4.0L with a 3 inch lift, i have replaced the tranny brand new well rebuilt anyways, and the motor is brand new as well also re-built. so i did a little 4 wheeling since i have gotten it running lol, it it goes threw it all with out a problem but since i have done that i decided to do a little mudding and lets just say swimming well i took my baby through a little pound lets say with out checking out how deep it was first. and well even with my lift i had water up to the bottom of my windows well since i did that the second i rolled out my car died well long story short my ECU is fried so i put a new one in but it is from a late 97 disco. well the only diffrence in the two is that the 97 has a evap thing in the tank ment for off road so that when you are sloshing around and the gas in your tank is moving you sometimes get air in your lines.
the evap thing in the tank raises the pressure in the tank and shoots that air in the lines through a little valve form what i have heard and straight into the evap canister well my 96 does not have that.

so i have a check engine light on now that is from that but if i get the parts and put them on from the 97 so that now it has all the parts would that be better than finding the stock one and putting that in , and also do you guys think it would work just asking for a little help since i dont really know the platforms to well
