Thank you for the reply,

I just got a quote from my mechanic, 1100 $ labor and 800 $ parts + cylinder heads cleaned and checked + 12 months/ 12000 miles warranty.
That's probably a fair deal. I hope I will not have any additionnal parts to replace.
Thanks for your interest and help.

How much more will it be if the heads need machining?

Are you at the very least having the valves ground?

Seems silly to spend those $ and not even have the valves ground.

The heads will be machined and it is included in the price.
I am waiting on the valves to see if it is included.

Given a 0.002" acceptable variation of a cylinder head, unless one scrupulously cleans the mating surfaces, enough gasket crud will remain to make using a straight edge silly.

When I remove a pair of cylinder heads, they go to my machinist to be cleaned and measured using the dial indicators on his resurfacing machine, thus being certain of accurate and precise measuring, to a level beyond a visual inspection using a straight edge.

I've never had a come back on cylinder head work. I do not know a dealership tech who can say the same.

Yes, I've been criticized for this attitude, but results speak loudly. I do not want to have to repeat the job on my dime because I failed to have work done by someone who is better setup to do the work than I-and I have a Brown & Sharpe straight edge, yet I trust my machinist's resurfacing machine more than I trust my eyesight and straight edge.

Before you comment that my machinist has a vested interest, I've been using him for nearly 30 years and he has plenty of work that he does not need work that isn't necessary.
I was just curious and you are right on the money.

Get a break down on the parts quote, he is about $500 heavy. Usually parts and fluids run about $300 to $350.
His labor rate is very fare.

The head gasket set is $ 562.50, the oil + filter $ 16, thermostat $ 56, antifreeze $ 34, heads resurfacing $ 95, power flush cooling system $ 61, head gasket set, plenum gasket + head bolts installation $ 1092. I was a little high on the parts this morning, I didn't have the estimate with me.

That ios where they are getting you, the a Rover head gasket set and head bolts thru Atlantic British is around $250, t/stat about $18, and power flushing is a joke when you can do it at home for about $15 when you do your next oil change.
Something to think about.
