Gear Oil for differentials and LT230 on classic Rovers (D1, RRC, etc)
Forgive me for a "what oil" thread. I need to replace the gear oil in the LT230 and the diffs. My LT230 is stock and has gear oil in it. I heard they can be filled with ATF instead, but it makes sense to stick with whatever was first fill to avoid mixing. My diffs have 7x29 pinion and ring gears and True-Tracs.
What's in there now is a combination of Sta-Lube ($75/gallon) and Liqui-Moly ($120/gallon). It's been in there for at least three years but only about 15,000 miles. At this point, I'm mostly replacing it due to the potential of contamination.
I'm not putting anything fancy or expensive in there because if I wade at all there is a good probability of water intrusion and then I'll be dumping it out. On the other hand, the oil in there now has gone at least 2 years and has not been emulsified. If I knew it was going to get water this winter/spring cycle, I would just use Walmart gear oil. But the fill could go for years. So I'm looking at stuff in the $50-60 per gallon price range. Lucas is $50, Valvoline full synthetic is $60.
It doesn't make sense that the LT230 would need 140 and that would probably just create more drag on it. 140 might make sense in the diffs, but I'm not likely to tow more than a 1000 pound trailer (dirt bikes).
So what do you think? 90 or 140?
