Ignition Timing

Ignition Timing
I have a 86 range rover classic with a 3.5lt fuel injected.
I have not been able to time it correctly. The timing is way off. I have lined up the distributor according to workshop manual turning the distributor will not allow me to set the initial timing. its way off 50+ degrees.
I have check air gap, done tune-up all the works but the timing is killing me.
Thanks for the help

RE: Ignition Timing
I would double check your timing set up. remove #1 sparkplug, rotate crankshaft untill the TDC mark on the front crank pulley lines up with the pointer. #1 piston should be at the top of its stroke, now ensure that the dist rotor is pointing near the #1 terminal on the cap. If its not close you will have to re-index the distributor untill it is. then you should be able to set the timing. Hope this helps.
