Default Import question

Not sure if this the right thread but it had 'help' in it so here goes. Ready to purchase an ex-MOD 110. It meets the 25 year rule, '86, engine will be good to go in a few years as they did a swap (same type so meets the rules). I've searched the forums and have only seen info on the 25 year rule but not about modifications. I know there can't be any or very little as it has to be in the original condition but what about MOD vehicles? I'm not sure if the vehicle was modified after as it has a roll cage and a few other bits or came that way from the factory. I've been told I'm good to go if it meet the age but am also seeing that it doesn't meet the modification bit since the Army probably (hopefully not) made changes. Thanks in advance for any help!

Depends on a few things, what specifically has been changed, how are you importing the vehicle and what port are you coming into. Rollbars, snorkels, replacement seats and glass - no issue. Disk brakes all around - depends on your destination port and inspector (I would advise against it for zero risk). Galvanized Chassis (I would highly advise against RORO transport). I wanted clarification on this dealing with an inspection on a snorkel. The email I received back from EPA was a breather does not significantly change the engine or drivetrain to be classified as a modification. Again, this doesn't mean you can get tied up in port at $150 a day trying to get your vehicle across. The issue I've come across with the military models is proof of age. Example - a military vehicle was manufactured in 1987 (All good). The first date of registration could be 2014 (first private sale to public). If you cannot "prove" that the vehicle was manufactured in 1987, and your official paperwork (the inspection fallback) states the vehicle was first registered in 2014 - do you see the issue? Again, this is a worst case scenario and most vehicles do look their age, it depends on your port.

Would a Land Rover VIN on a >25 yr old vehicle "prove" the manufacture date was >25 years? For example, my VIN comes up as manufactured between 1982 and 1984, and a totally different VIN was used for vehicles built after 84. Thanks!

JL45, I am doing almost the same exact thing you are doing. I will be transferring back to the states within the next several months, and I am buying an '82-'84 ex-MOD 90 (export version - Left Hand Drive) to take with me. If you find any red flags, I would appreciate a heads-up! Thanks again.

Land Rover Defender Forum - Defender & Series Owners Community lots of good information there I would do some research on there and if you have specific questions that are still not answer post up and ask. Search first though as this topic has been covered in detail time and again on there.
