Default Interesting Problem

Here it is folks,
My range rover is blowing black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating. Here the interesting part. There's no engine check light on , new air filter, new spark plugs and leads. Its not burning oil, oil level on the dip stick hasn't dropped at all, but new oil goes black very quickly after about 2000km. Cleaned the MAF sensor no improvement.
Any ideas folks, as to the cause.

Try a different brand of fuel for a few tanks.
Use the same brand everytime though so you narrow it down.

The RR is a 1998 model HSE V8 its not burning oil it appears to be idling alright, start really well, just wondring about the gap of the spark plugs which is set to the recommended gap. And I would assume if there is no check light on, then the injectors are ok. There is the smell of fuel in th e oil though this could be a clue but have no idea as to what it means. Could be a vaccum leak somewhere??But then it would over rev I would imagine.

How many miles has the engine done? could it be the oil control rings letting by? or the breather to the head or crankcase blocked? I'm not clued up on LR petrol engines as I haven't owned one for 10 years only diesel. Have you had the ECU codes read to see whether they reveal anything? I'm of course assuming one can read codes from a 1998 RR.

Hi OffroadFrance, its done approx 124,000km, i've checked the purge valve and although this was blocked it has been cleaned. No I haven't had the codes check as yet, and yes codes can be read but I have travel 60km to a dealerships as no one around here can read them.

No I don't think it would be a blown head gaskest as there is no creamy oil appearance on on the oil cap not losing water, spark plug are carbon fouled and dry, not wet or green.

Is your ignition advance mechanism working OK throughout the rev range?, also any injector stutter whilst accelerating?
