Just bought a LandRover Freelander. 2003. Took it to the gas station to fill up. The gas cap has a lock on it, unlocked the cap, and took the key out of the cap before I reattached the cap. Now it wont fit!! Looked in the Owner's Manual. It says you are not supposed to take the key out before you reattach the gas cap to the gas tank. Any suggestions.

I can get the key back into the cap, but it wont let me turn the key to the unlock position so that I can reattach the cap.

The gas cap has some prongs, mine has 3, when you press them all manually, it will allow you to turn the key and reconnect the gas cap.
