LT230 Inspection Question
In the process of LS swapping my disco. I removed my transmission and TC because I knew the original TC was on the way out when I bought it. This is the fill plug from my "New" TC. Is the general opinion to run this or should I just rebuild while the TC is out of the Disco. Oil did not smelled burned and still had slight red hue to it when I drained it from the "New" TC. Old TC oil was black and burned, but nowhere near this much material on the plug. This is not my first LS swap, but I have never owned an AWD or 4x4 vehicle or ever needed to do corrective work on a differential. Im definitely new to this genre of drivetrains.

Connocclar,
Congrats on the initiation to the 4x4 world. That is a pretty decent amount of material. First, is it physical chunks, or just a bunch of fine material standing on end off of the magnet? Fine material is not uncommon; chunks, you may have something coming apart. Also, you mention the fluid was red in hue. These transfer cases take gear lube (normally more yellow in hue). How thick was the fluid coming out?
One more note, you may consider rebuilding/swapping the high ratio of the transfer case to the 1.003:1 gear set from Ashcroft. I'm fixing to do the same after nearly 20K miles on my LS swap.

Howdy Mike,
I've since rebuilt the "new" transfer case and transmission with more durable parts, I've also recently finished LS swapping my Disco with an LY6. She's at the muffler shop atm getting new exhaust welded. The pieces in the image where large chunks of gear teeth from the old gears inside the TC, previous owner had no clue what they were doing because this came from the fill plug spot and not the drain plug spot. The other TC had also been filled with transmission fluid hence the red hue.
