Default Mile marker Winch Problem

Hello, I have a Milemarker SI12000 Winch and I recently unspooled it all of the way with the intention to re-spool it a little bit neater. To my dismay I found that the end of the cable (non-hook end) is frayed and lacking anything to secure it to the cylinder. However, on the cylinder there is a little metal tab secured with a screw that appears to have something to do with holding down the end of the cable, but I cannot get the cable to stay put. Is there a good way to reattach the cable so I can respool it? I'd rather not buy a whole new cable. (See images)

Thanks
