Default Motor Oil Recommendation

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this or if I should have posted in the Discovery II section. I recently purchased an 03 DII HSE, 56K miles and was wondering what motor oil you all recommend. Full synthetic? Thank you.

You will get all kinds of answers here. Many folks like Mobil 1 Syn, others Royal Purple, others Shell Rotella in large containers at Walmart. Others most any oil that meets the special D2 European specs. I run Amsoil Full Synthetic European formula myself with an Amsoil oil filter to match.

Some folks will also run a different weight in the summer than winter. Plenty of threads on this here and other forums about everybody's logic for what they run and how often they change it. Like I said, I use the Amsoil oil filter, but other filters that are preferred by some are Wix, NAPA Gold, & K&N (do not use the K&N air filters on the D2, the oil from them will wipe out your MAF sensor in the air intake path to the throttle body.

Again different options on how long to run the oil and do a filter change. Here is my logic and method I use. I do an engine flush before converting to synthetic to clean out the old regular oil carbon build-up and since synthetic works like cleaner, that 2nd oil change needs to come sooner as some additional crude will be freed up and the filter and oil will probably need a change, just to make sure things are not getting clogged up. Again, just my method, read and see what you think and make an educated decision for your rover.

I agree with the above reply. Consider the 15W/40 synthetic Rotella oil from Shell, overall all seems to work the best.
Also plan on replacing your grey spark plug wires sooner or later cause they fail alot and have your front drive shaft checked to see how many grease fittings it has, needs 1 per u-joint or it will fail and take out your tranny also.
Any questions, send me your number and I'll call you.

Thanks Tony. I'm glad you mentioned that about the K&N filter as I was getting ready to order one. Your the 2nd person that's told me that. Much appreciated.

Thanks Disco Mike for the info and additional tips. I'll be sure to have those done as well. This is truly a beautiful vehicle. It's a real head turner and I notice I get the stare down from the Jeep and Hummer drivers LOL.

I have additional questions regarding different areas. Is it best to start new threads for each topic?

If you start a new thread for each topic in the DII section you will get the most results.
Rotella 15w-40 does not come in a full syn.
I also use Rotella and NAPA Gold oil filters.
It is rated #1 in lab tests, its $6 compared to what, $15 for a Amsoil filter?
But, thats up to you.

If you're interested in experiencing the crack that is BITOG, then head on over to Bob Is The Oil Guy - Forums powered by UBB.threads™ You'll go into lubricant overload in no time! Lots of recommendations on filters as well - folks just love to cut them open and show you what you get for your money. Plenty of youtube videos on cut open filters as well.

I just got onto the Rotella bandwagon as well. I'll run 15W-40 for the warm weather, and pop back down to something thinner for winter (I get antsy during the single digit temps when the oil light stays on much longer than normal during startup... that was with 5W-30 synthetic).

Thanks Jimmy, I'm doing a change tomorrow and I've been reading way too much.
