Default New Member question

Hey!
New member - glad I found this site! I am looking to purchase a LR and have narrowed down the search to and 00 and an 01 Discovery, both with about 75K. I have always driven pick ups, jeeps, 4x4's, etc and feel pretty confident in my abilities to look a car over prior to purchase. Just wondering if there are any areas or problems specific to Discoveries that need any special attention??
Great Site! I look forward to spending time here and learning more about my future "passtime".

Welcome to the group.
If you are wanting to do alot of 4wheeling and plan on making modifications to this new Rover, I would suggest you stay with the 00. The reason is the 00 has what is called a CDL, lockable transfer case that the 01, 02 and 03's don't have. You will need to make a conversion so you can use the t/case in the locked up mode, but this is a must because it will give you alot more traction by splitting the power equally between the front and rear axles.
Other wise both vehicles are pretty much the same, with no big problems.
What are you wanting to use this truck for? Make sure you have it checked out first and if possible buy an extended warranty to cover it for a couple of years, they are a little expensive but well worth the expense.
Good luck,
Mike

Thanks for the info -

The LR will be used mostly on weekends - some off roading - but nothing too extreme. Just added a 99 to the list of possibilities and will be test driving this week. One of the vehicles is actually at a Land Rover dealer so I will push to have it checked really well. Do you recommend a dealer or would an independent specializing in imports be ok?

I drive a 99 and swear by it. Over the last 4 years I have made many changes to help it off the road and let me tell you, it does climb.
I drive this as my primar driver averaging 25,000 mile a year on her.
If you are planning to do alot of wheeling buy the 99 or 00 so you can use the CDL for better traction on those fun weekends.

Thanks for the info! I have narrowed the search to 99's and 00's and hope to get some test driving done this weekend. Lots of variables - mileage seems to be all over the board when it comes to used Discoveries. I am trying to stay in the 75K range on mileage. what thoughts do you all have on the higher mileage machines? (as long as it has been maintained)
