Default Since we are talking Transmissions....

2004 D2, 130k. Excellent conditon..... Or was... lol. I have a bunch of different questions. Looking for advice... since they are all separate tech questions I'll make different posts.

Here is the first question.. it's a general transmission question.

If I have a trans issue, can a LR mechanic work on it? Or is this something that needs a look - and speciality tools- from a transmission specialist?

This is my major question without getting into the nitty-gritty details.

Thanks in advance.

Hard to say. Not all Land Rover people like getting "red oil" on their hands and not all transmission shops know ZF transmissions very well.

LR mechs will service the trans and may diagnose the faults but will outsource the rebuilds or more involved work to a specialist.
I would only trust work done by an authorised ZF repairer.

It is unfortunate that you are having trouble with the transmission. If you share the symptoms that you are experiencing, along with the fault codes that can be obtained by hooking up an OBD2 scanner, somebody here could point you in the right direction. It could be something as simple as a switch or your battery is on its way out. This is the place for getting into the nitty-gritty. whatever problems that you are having, a member here has most likely already dealt with it and knows the fix. May be better to start a thread over in Disco2 if you decide to do so. Keyword search on here and Youtube first, if you haven't already.

I'm in Orange County CA. Anyone know one? I would prefer not to use Google.

As for symptoms, its just shifting oddly right now. Sometimes it revs high before shifting. Other times its a harsh shift. Sometimes its fine.

But there are two other driveline issues that I have. And I am not sure if they are related.
1) I can not lock the CDL. It worked fine in the past. This weekend I could not get it engaged. But moving from 4x4 Low to 4x4 High was fine.

2) at very high speeds (87 - 90ish MPH) i have a strong driveline vibration. It feels like something is binding. There are weaker signs of this same vibration around 70 mph.

ANYTIME you have a vibration, remove the shafts front and back, and run the Ujoints through the range of motion and look for signs of wear and fatigue. If the 2 Ujoints at the double cardan do not have grease fittings, then they should probably be rebuilt with the serviceable type anyway. If you haven't greased them in over a year, rebuild. Greasing them now won't reverse the damage. Rolling underneath the truck and wiggling the shaft won't tell you anything. The only time that works is if the Ujoints are holding on by the caps; you must remove them.

Ok check your driveshafts AND oil the shifter linkage. It could be frozen. Spray WD40 or the like to loosen it up. Then try shifting it over by working it back and forth. (Like you did with your second girlfriend) if it does free-up you can get some oil in there to lubricate/ protect. You have to start with the simple stuff. No point in getting scammed or throwing good money away. You shouldn't be driving over 80mph anyway! On the trans, I would drain the fluid to see what is going on with it. Put a new trans filter and fresh oil in it and see how it does. I don't know, I think there are quite a few simple things that you can try before you just hand it off to a tech, especially if you have a little free time and Internet access.

Thanks number9 ...
I do feel groovy..
and 85+ is the normal driving speed in the outlying areas as you go inland in Southern CA. The highway patrol really don't give many tickets out here for speeding (not saying it doesn't happen, but its not common).

I don't have much time, and that is why I want to take it to my tech.

As for taking the shafts out, the front was just put on in June. It was a remanufactured from a reputable LR shop down here in Orange CO. I also had him recheck it and the rear shaft back in Sept/Oct. I know he is on the forum, so he will stay nameless.

Whenever I have the truck taken in I tell them to lube the drive shafts. I can hold hope that it is done.

Anyway, I will get under it this Sunday and check the CDL shift linkage. I hope its easy to find. Anyone have a pic of what I should look for??
