Default Starter Solenoid Bypass

I have a 1960 Series 2 with the 2.0 Diesel and just had my starter solenoid fail. Currently trying to trace one down, but figured it wouldn't hurt to have a plan B. When the ignition relay is turned, the starter armature engages, but the motor won't turn. I figured I could bypass the solenoid with a 500amp relay strait to the starter motor. This relay would be activated by a momentary switch after the armature has engaged. Can anyone speak to the amperage being appropriate?

Just want to get the poor thing started so I can chase out some oil leaks..
