Thermostat T-shoot
1994 LR Defender 90 with 4.6L HSE Rover engine 3.9L stock intake. Trouble shooting an overheating problem. Trying to locate the thermostat to check it. I think I've located it next to the distributor but wanted to throw the question out there.
The top radiator hose connects to the thermostat housing.

With age of the truck, the radiator may have a lot of sludge buildup in the lower rows. When warmed up, engine off, feel or measure with IR themometer the fins top to bottom. If bottom is more than 10F colder, an indy rad shop can unsolder a side tank and rod it out. Shop near me gets $75 for that, carry in.
Also on your stat, you want the "jiggle" device or 1/8 inch bleeder hole at teh 12:00 position, it allows steam to pass and not form a pocket.

Check your coolant cap first. It is a quick and easy fix. $15.00, instead of the thermostat, we had overheating problem, replaced, water pump (it blew), hoses, thermostat, and finally, upon reading someones suggestion on this forum, replaced the coolant cap, which is pressurized, it was the problem!!!!! Not the thermostat.

Well I got a 195 degree stat from oreilly around the corner and switched it out after the 88 Celsius failed in 200 degree water. Let it run 15-20 minutes stationary then drove around the neighborhood about 5-10 and let idle in the garage another 10. When I did the post drive idle the needle went from 12 o'clock to about 2 o'clock and I shut it down.
The gauge has no temps but it shouldn't get that hot?

Should've read it first. The 195 was listed oe. They had a 180 that was off center but I don't think it had the jiggle deal. It was the same diameter but was longer. I can try it or try advance auto. I think they are here in Phoenix.
