Transfer box or front differential?

I thought I was locking the diff, as it felt like I was able to move the lever to the left and up and down. I decided to take a peek at the manual, and noticed for the first time, that there is a light that comes on when it is locked - that was not coming on. So, I got in on the passenger side, and basically put my feet up on the door and pushed as hard as I could, and the light came on! Unfortunately, when I put it into gear (I have a manual tranny) the light went off. I found that by pulling as hard as I can to the left and back, then holding it that way as I shift into gear and let out the clutch, I can make it move on its own - with no pipe wrench. It made some horrible banging, clunking, sounds until it engaged and started to move, but it moved. I think it will be enough to get it into the lot - I hope so. I just agreed to buy a new VW Passat Wagon - it will cost me just $19,500 so long as I can get the Disco into the lot on its own power.
BTW - I am thinking it may be the cable or linkage from the lock lever?? I tried working it back and forth a bunch thinking it would loosen up a bit. It doesn't seem to. Is there any way to lubricate it?
