Unhappy Transmission Output Shaft "play"...

Hi everybody, new to the forum, been lurking for awhile, finally bought my first Land Rover a couple weeks ago, high mileage (150k) but runs strong. Just had the fluids done by Grease Monkey (through the previous owner).

Anyways took it on a road trip, it drove wonderfully, strong transmission, etc.

Well to my despair, apparently Grease Monkey "forgot" to check the Transfer Case oil. And Yes, I SHOULD OF CHECKED MYSELF. Coming back from the road trip, my Transfer Case Blew. Got a good replacement fairly cheap from another wrecked 03.

Mechanic just called me saying he's ready to put the new one in & looks great, BUT... There is about 1 in of "play" in the Output Drive shaft of the transmission. He thinks it might just be the Bearing, but doesn't know enough about LR transmissions.

Any suggestions?? And as said before, the transmission was/is strong , No problems in shifting or anything....

(I'm very tempted in just telling him to install the Transfer Case and let me go!)

It doesn't sound promising. Installing an iffy transfer box isn't a good move as it wastes your cash and can do more damage. I'm not sure but I believe the output shafts run on tapered roller bearings each end and there should only be very minimal end float of a few thousands of an inch. Check the RAVE manual for the tolerance spec. I do believe Savannah Buzz has a direct online link to the manual.

Look in Sections - 04-14 and 41-1 onwards

Thank you very much for advice. Good news, transmission is Ok. Going to run with it. The play in the output shaft is not as bad as thought, the bearing is still good, just waiting on a new seal.

It is common for the t-case output shaft to have play in it, it is supposed to be minimal but it does happen.
Usually not noticed except at high speeds.
