Default Value Tire

Hey everyone,

I have a opportunity to get a set of 5 new tires on rims and balanced for $400.

These are the tires Tire Details - Discount Tire Direct

I know they might not be what most here get on their trucks... however my disco tires might have a season left and I wanted to see if these would be a good tire just to put her on some new rubber.

I would gain a extra brand new spare, not to mention I would have a set of rims that i could screw around with.

thoughts?

I take it you're buying the set used.
If you're going to be off-roading I'd be looking for a set on 16" wheels. For the same tire diameter you have a lot more rubber between the ground and the wheel with 16" vs 18".

If you do get them, inspect them very carefully for blemishes/damage, tread and sidewall, and check the date codes. If you don't know how to read date codes, google tire date codes.

Thanks for that info on the "tire date codes" googling now. I talked to the guy who is selling them and he just put them on his Disco and the Disco died soon after so the guy is selling the tires. From the pictures they look brand new.

And yes I have 18" right now. I won't be doing any heavy off roading yet but I will for sure be heading out to sticks with her.

I have attached the pics of the tires from his truck.

they will probably wear like butter with a 300 rating, but for $400 for 5 new tires & wheels you can sell the rims when the tires gone.

Is there any demand to speak of for DII 18" wheels?

I ended up picking them up. I even got a 6th rim. So 6 rims in really good shape plus 5 new tires... for $400, I think thats a deal.

You are right about selling the RIMs, though I might have to put these tires on my original rims... because I like the ones I have now a little more... but its all the same at the end of the day.

They might wear fast but its a lot better then what I have on there now. I was looking at my front wheels and they are pretty low on tread not to mention they are starting to crack.

As far as 18" vs 16"... I know for the real off roader 16" is the way to go... but here is the deal... my second car is VW GTI hatchback... with 17inch rims and maybe 3 inches of tire on it.

I have been able to follow my buddy that has a CJ7 Jeep with 35" tires to pretty much 80% of all the spots we go to... Sure once we start climbing off road thats a different story...

But The point I'm making is with the right skill and time I think these 18inch wheels will get to where I need to go, with no problem at all.

ill update the post once the wheels are on and I will keep track of how much tread they are loosing.

Sounds like you really needed tires so that's a good deal.

It's not so much off-roading skill that comes in to play with 18 vs 16, just that you can get more rubber on 16", given the same OD tire, which lets you air down more, add more cushioning and protects your wheels better. And generally the tires are cheaper, though that difference is narrowing.

6 wheels and 5 tires for $400 sounds like a good deal. Like everybody says, if you only get a season or two out of the tires you can sell the wheels, or your wheels and get a better set of tires the next time around.

True that! This will also give me a little time to polish up my original rims while I drive on the new ones for a bit.

I also like the idea of 2 spares. Once I get my roof rack I'll throw one up there for the big trips.
