whine from around belt at idle
98 range rover has a whine or whisle at idle after it warms up. The noise goes away when you excerlate the enging and then comes back after it goes to idle again. The car has 100,000 miles on it.
Thanks for any input.

Take a big jug of water, and pour it onto each pully...if the whine goes away with the water, then you found the source of your squeak. It could be the belt slipping on the pulley, and you need a new belt, or it could be the pully going out causing the slip! Either way, you should isolate the slip, and then replace the belt as per standard maintenance if it has not been done recently, and if it's the pulley, well you should probably fix that too.
And keep it to one post please...no reason you need 2 threads on one problem.

First, is your belt new, is it cracked?
I would suggest you remove the belt, spin each pulley, feel for a roughness or listen for a noise.
You will see a couple of place pulleys, idler pulleys, iof they haven't been replace, replace them as well as the pulley on the belt tensioner.

The belt is only about 5000 miles old. The whine is more like a bering or a vaccum leak. It a leak is possible. Is it possible that it could be thealternator or the water pump starting to go out. I will try the water on the idler pulleys to see if it is it.

I found out where the whine was coming from. I used a wood rod to scope the noise. It was comming from the alternator. The bering was squeling like a pig.
Thanks for all of the input
